WRITE 28 DAYS: MEDITATION RESPONSES – DAY 7: DISTRACTION

I’m participating in Sharon Salzberg’s 28-Day Real Happiness Meditation Challenge again this year, and my plan for this blog series is to write a poem or reflection on each day’s practice. You can find all the responses on the landing page.

Not the Breath

Thoughts like clouds across the sky
 glimpse white-breasted nuthatch
 camera out, snap, snap,
on the other feeder, goldfinch? sparrow?
 oh, it’s gone
 flitting chickadee
 not the breath

Thoughts like clouds across the sky
cat on desk, pick him up, plop him down
 another cup of tea,
 kitchen, tea pot, water, resettle
oh yeah this is peaceful, conducive,
 red-breasted nuthatch now, snap, snap
always tempted to call it red-throated, why?
 not the breath

Thoughts like clouds across
ping! text, quick check, quick response,
cat again, water boiled, pour tea, ah resettle
close eyes, open eyes slightly, note the breath,
quick oximeter check, pulse and oxygen fine,
dream snippet arises, chase it, chase it,
 not the breath

Thoughts like clouds
 ice or rain tomorrow?
 remember: make bisque, walk, when?
remember: schedule meeting, send out email,
so many photos to edit, too many perhaps?
oh! female cardinal in the crabapple, titmouse too,
snap snap snap, foggy window, ugh,
 not the breath

Thoughts like clouds
 breathing
 breathing
 breathing
Chime. And now, open your eyes and relax.
