again and again

Night creeps around me, silent and sure.
I sleep sound under soft grey blankets 
through the travelling night, lullabied, 
cradled, vast dreamscape indwelling of dragons and 
water, whispered myth, remembered dogs 
lost again and again, unable to hear me 
calling, and exotic scarves floating, lemongrass, 
ginger, saffron, a world away, 

all of it flowing like my slowing breath, 
instinctive, and all of it lost 
again and again each morning, 
displaced by the unbaptised ordinary, 
the day undecided but already streaming along 
like a train through a haunted countryside, 
so remote, so unexpectedly at hand.
