LINK FEST: 23 SEPTEMBER 2025

essay: September Newsletter (David Lebovitz) So much of interest to me here. Pastry chef and cookbook writer Lebovitz lives in Paris and writes about living in France, French politics, French culture, wines, cheeses, desserts, restaurants, travel, etc. “On my bike in Paris, I have to stop pedaling in order to change speeds, and when people see that I’ve stopped pedaling, merely for a nanosecond, they start clanging their bell and trying to pass me. It’s nice to be somewhere with a more leisurely pace. I fell in love with Arles on this trip, which is a small French city with a cosmopolitan edge.”

short essay: Addressing Holes in Naturalistic Plantings (Jared Barnes/Meristem) The key is to plant in layers. And if a plant colony dies and leaves a hole, i.e., “if a species doesn’t work anymore, what do we do? We need to identify suitable replacements. The desire to try something new after a gap appears in the garden is always a strong urge for a gardener, but in this style of planting, too much diversity can make things look disjointed. I’m looking at the rest of the garden for inspiration and thinking of something that will offer long season interest. If there are plants already thriving in this space, that means they will likely help patch this hole.”

map: Bird Migration Explorer (Audubon) Search for any bird (Bird Search) and see its winter, summer, and year-round range along with a timeline of its migration from place to place. You can also search for a location and see data for all of that location’s tagged bird species (I used Rehoboth Beach, DE), including birds’ connections between one place and another (by clicking the hexagons, representing places, on the map). I’m sure there’s lots more you can do on this site: “This is your guide to the heroic annual journeys made by over 450 bird species, and the challenges they face along the way.”

lists: What Are 5 Things in Your Kitchen You’d Never Be Caught Without? (Jo Elvin/Cup of Jo) A few lists in the article and over 300 lists in the comments. For me, maybe garlic, Pecorino romano, bucatini, salted butter or olive oil, black pepper, jarred artichokes. Yes, that’s six, and also frozen peas, very unripe green bananas, arugula, and citrus fruit.
