article: Amsonia for the Mid-Atlantic Region (Mt. Cuba Center). Report of their species trials, including pollinator visitations.
newsletter rec: The Whippet (McKinley Valentine). This week’s is an example of why it’s, as someone in the comments said, chef’s kiss: #179: Antarctica is not the answer. I particularly like her intro essay on having a heart defect and getting an ultrasound.
essay: Another Year of Pollination: Pollenkitt (Daniel Murphy/Awkward Botany). Did you know there was such a thing as pollenkitt — which looks like a Swedish word but also Eartha Kitt’s sibling? Did you know there was so very much to pollen?
experiment/essay: A slightly tipsy investigation into my wife’s superpower (Adam Mastroianni/Experimental History), plus some other stuff, including a classic example of mimetic theory in practice further down the page. But it’s the egg study and Adam’s apparent inability to smell that eggy wet dog odor that has me agog. (As McKinley Valentine commented in her newsletter linked above, “(hot off the press: People Different).”
essay: Unconditional love. It’s the thing I always thought I wanted. Until I got it. (Sophie Heawood/The Sophist). Amusing and completely relatable.
