2 October – Today I learned:
- That the Tarnished Plant Bug (Lygus lineolaris) is “the most common plant bug in the U.S. … Over half of the US cultivated plant species are listed as host plants for tarnished plant bugs” (per BugGuide). And I had one on my sunflower today.
I checked my photo archive and found that I probably had a fourth or fifth stage tarnished plant bug nymph on a cleome on 10 Sept. 2015. (Scroll down to see one on the Univ of Florida’s Featured Creature page.)
This is one reason I take photos of things I can’t identify. Thanks to Facebook’s Bug Guide group for the ID.
- That Simone Weil, in her essay on Attention and Will, said this, which I love: “Attention, taken to its highest degree, is the same thing as prayer. It presupposes faith and love. Absolutely unmixed attention is prayer.” Similar to poet Mary Oliver’s “Attention is the beginning of devotion.”
