Another in a series of explorations of other “gardens,” whether cultivated or not. And so soon after Earth Garden I!
I visited the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens on Barter’s Island, in Boothbay, Maine, this week, several times. This is probably my 15th or so trip here, including visits in the late 1990s when it was little more than a wooded path with an skimpy Information kiosk. To say it’s flourished since then is an understatement. (History of CMBG.) See their maps of the gardens for a sense of the extent of the place.
Here’s an annotated slideshow of the gardens — which include a rose and perennial garden, a hillside garden, a rhododendron garden, a Garden of Five Senses, a children’s garden, a meditation garden, an entrance garden, a ledge garden, a kitchen garden, and several ponds — and the trails, eight or so that traverse primarily wooded areas, some alongside the Sheepscot River, for several miles combined.
