The first in a series of explorations of other “gardens,” whether cultivated or not.
I spend a lot of time in botanical gardens, arboretums, meadows, and woods, gaining inspiration and instruction from all of them for my own garden. Time spent identifying unknown plants in the woods is worth it to me, because those same plants turn up everywhere afterward — how did I not see them before? And many are related to plants found in cultivated gardens:

And in the “garden” I explored yesterday evening and this evening, Penny Lake Preserve in Boothbay, Maine, there is the wood anemone (anemone quinquefolia) in the woods, cousin to anemone sylvestris and anemone tormentosa (to name just two), which are in my garden; in order, these are the wood anemone, sylvestris, and tormentosa:
