I do love hellebores, even though they stink and their leaves get all dry and crinkly. But the flowers!
Anyway, aside from The Adoration of the Hellebore, I also finished up the non-veggie part of the side-yard sheet-mulching project today in more lovely early spring weather (62F and sunny). I did a sort of skimpy job — cardboard, fairly thin layers of newspaper (and used them all up), and mulch on top — but I think it will suffice. I’ll dig into the sod underneath to plant any perennials or shrubs here and all will be well.
Once the compost and loam are delivered next week, and I scrounge some more cardboard and newspaper, I can complete the bed with the vegetable section.
This is quite an unorthodox (i.e., half-assed) sheet-mulching job, so don’t try this at home unless you too are light on the materials you need and heavy on desire and energy. I’m sure there’s a Permaculture Principle about that somewhere …
