article: You’ve Never Seen Ants Like This Before: The Antscan database captures the tiny insects’ diversity and shows how the world’s living things could be rendered in three dimensions (Ari Daniel/NYT – gifted link) A database of scans of almost 2,200 specimens of ants was created in a week, using a synchrotron particle accelerator, resulting in high-res, 3D images that allow scientists globally to work with examples from collections that had been previously difficult to access. ““Even though it’s many specimens, they all still fit in a suitcase. … So that’s a benefit of working on small insects.”” Amazing images and animation. short essay: Morning runs: Some thoughts on homeostasis (Rosecrans Baldwin/Meditations in an Emergency) (Honestly, every time I see his newsletter name, I wish I’d thought of it. It’s perfect.) Exactly what it says on the tin: some thoughts on homeostasis. The random and digressive kind of thoughts I like most. And that painting.

essay: Spring Equinox The real start of the year (Jeanette Winterson/Mind Over Matter) From 2022. “The best thing to do every morning is to read your own energy. How do you feel? … Is the sun shining? Will you see a friend later? Have you scheduled in something to look forward to? Big or small. Doesn’t matter. I love my coffee in the morning. My first job downstairs is to open the back door and get a big breath of fresh air – rain or shine, winter or summer – I just copy the cats and dog, that’s what they do – that’s how the ‘read’ the day, nose up, what’s in the air? What smells different? Clear out the night-lungs. Start again.” Also, a good reminder: “I never dig when the ground is wet because it does no good to the soil structure, the spade and fork, or me. Especially me. I get filthy and mad. And what for? I defeat my own purpose.”
