LINK FEST: JANUARY 6, 2026

interactive animation: An exploration of the size of life (Neal Agarwal & Julius Csotonyi/Neal.Fun) from 3.5 nanometers (DNA) to 44 hectares (the Pando clone in Utah). With cello. Highly recommended.

short article: How Aquatic Turtles Survive Brumation (Mary Holland/Naturally Curious)

article: The Incredible Shrinking Shrew (Loren Merrill/The Outside Story/Northern Woodlands) An already tiny animal (weight = 1 to 2 pennies) shrinks even more in winter: Not just their body mass but “their skeletons, including their skulls, also get smaller. This is known as Dehnel’s phenomenon, and it has been documented in a handful of small mammals and weasels. It represents a form of phenotypic plasticity, in which an organism can express a different phenotype (the observable or expressed traits) in response to changing ecological conditions.”

article: Frank Gehry: 12 Essential, Stunning Projects (NYT – gifted link) “The most celebrated architect of his age,” Frank Gehry died at age 96 last month. I’d love to see the interiors of some of these.
