essay (and recipe): The third stair, shortbread, Turkish rocket, and a shallow creamy, crunchy gratin (Mark Diacono/Abundance) Ten years after his father died, Diacono wrote about it: “I had the urge to write about the day, partly, I think, so that I might not lose it to the tide of time. At that point, I don’t think I appreciated that writing can not only help you understand the world and your place in it, but it can reveal things previously hidden to your conscious brain.” Plus an asparagus and Turkish rocket (arugula) gratin recipe.

photo essay: Ginna’s Native Garden Paradise (Nuts for Natives). “Ginna Tiernan [Director of the Eastern Shore’s native plant treasure, Adkins Arboretum.] has created a paradise of a garden on the third of an acre she shares with her family in the heart of Easton, Maryland. She has planted about 50 trees yet her garden has big swaths of sun loving perennials too.” She’s got a paw paw grove and a moss & fern garden under her air conditioner condensation drip pipe.
