essay: When the evacuations come for you – A fire story (Kelton Wright/Shangrilogs). Beautifully told, gritty, suspenseful, full of heart. “A long time ago, I was prepared for this. When I moved to the West, I knew forest fires well. Because of my parents, a smokejumper and a backcountry ranger, I knew all disasters well. I knew all about go-bags and tennis shoes at your desk and extra supplies in your car. I grew up with handguns in center consoles and spare keys hidden in wheel wells, with gas tanks always full and cash never low. I grew up checking exits and the wind. I was prepared. But I wasn’t there.”
article with photos: Why don’t birds’ nests blow out of trees? Avian architects at work (Heather Wall/Natural Wonders). Different reasons for different kinds of nests. Includes link to video of a bird sewing a nest together.
article: How We’re Adapting In The Face Of Climate Change (Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Boothbay, ME). Strategies include sourcing local and native plants; leaving more plant material in place during fall and delaying spring cleanup to protect overwintering insects; transitioning to a smart irrigation system and taking advantage of compost for soil health; working with other institutions to do assisted migration, i.e., moving plant species from their native ranges to, in this case, CMBG, as climates in more southern and northern locations may soon become too warm or too cold and otherwise inhospitable; collecting and conserving seeds; and educating the public through signage, classes, and tours.
virtual park visit: One-Minute Park (Elliott Cost). “One Minute Park allows you to visit parks from around the world for one minute each. These are just one minute videos, not webcams. Eventually the project will fill in all the minutes (1440) in a day. So far we have 197 minutes. You can create your own One Minute Park and contribute to the project.”
