essay: How Did I Change So Much, So Quickly? What holds us back most from growth (Andrea Gibson/Things That Don’t Suck). “‘shame is never fertile soil for growth’. A better world is not created from a planet of people hating themselves, but hate’s opposite.”
art: mixed media botanical art of Philadelphia-based artist Jill Haas (Danielle Krysa/The Jealous Curator). Hass’s “portfolio has been filled nature-inspired abstract work… until rather recently when a bunch of flowers starting blooming.” The light, the shadows, the colours, the grand shapes.
article: Tropical Plants In Your Backyard (David Bellangue/Center for Urban Habitats). Spicebush, Persimmons, and Pawpaws, oh my. I’ve got spicebush (Lindera benzoin) growing in my Zone 5a yard and some of my NH friends are growing pawpaws successfully. I like this article for its emphasis on botany and for its useful photos.
audio: Sounds of the Global Forest (Wild Rumpus/Timber Festival UK). Many locations.
short essay: The Power of Beauty (Rosecrans Baldwin/Meditations in an Emergency). I love a lot about this: the snippet of a story about winning at art that he shares; the mention of “micro-feelings, the ones I need to pause and examine, tease out;” and his conclusion, resting as it does on the ephemeral nature of beauty.
