LINK FEST: 16 AUGUST 2022

Links that may or may not be related to gardens, food, travel, nature, or heterotopias and liminal spaces but probably are. Sources in parentheses.

short essay: The Many Songs & Sounds of the Gray Catbird (Northern Woodlands). A catbird in California was recorded “adeptly copying the sounds of more than a dozen other bird species, as well as a tree frog.”

short essay : Loon Vocalizations: More Than Meets the Ear (Northern Woodlands again). The four sounds of the loon. [To hear some, go to Cornell’s All About Birds – Loons]

Google silly: Google “cat” and press the paw, and press it again, again. Try “Westminster dog show” and press the purple paw. Now Google “Cha Cha Slide” and press the microphone icon, and press it again, again. Google “Legally Blonde” and click the purse icon. You can also “flip a coin” or “roll a die.” Don’t forget “do a barrel roll” and “askew.”

list: 23 Lies You’ve Been Told About the World (The Curiosity Chronicle/Sahil Bloom). My favourites so far: Big changes will just happen on their own (the truth: “big decisions are better made fast than slow” — amen), There are timelines to achieve things in life, and Free time is bad.

restaurant menu generator: A Brooklyn bar menu generator (@vecchitto on Twitter). “Have you recently purchased a bar in Brooklyn, but are completely bereft of original ideas? … You can use this handy tool to generate a name and menu for your fine establishment – absolutely no imagination necessary!” Beautiful in its simplicity. Debating between the INVIGORATED RYE MEDLEY and FERMENTED CLAM WITH NATURAL WATER REDUCTION.

diary entries: Sylvia Plath’s Food Diary (Twitter/Rebecca Brill). “everything sylvia plath ate according to her journals, letters, poems, the bell jar & other texts.”
