Bones of Weeds in Snow

Yes, we got our first snowfall last night, only about 1/2″ but it’s lovely and it’s still hanging around as of this afternoon, because the temperature has just risen about freezing and it’s very gusty out. Tomorrow it’ll be in the 50s and the snow will be a sweet memory as well as an omen.

It was beginning winter,
An in-between time,
The landscape still partly brown:
The bones of weeds kept swinging in the wind,
Above the blue snow. — Theodore Roethke, from “The Lost Son”

  1. Goodness! Snow already! I suppose it is that time of year. It snowed about half an inch in San Jose in February of 1976 or so. It made history!

    1. Snow in San Jose! Now that’s crazy ⛄

      1. That was what we thought. We did not know what it was, and were afraid to go outside. When we determined that it was snow, we did not want to come in. It was gone by noon. It snowed in Los Angeles in 1962, and that was not the first time.

It seems so soon. Surely it is still Autumn there? How amazing is the blue colour of the snow in the shadows!

    1. It is earlyish, and we may not get any more snow for a month or two.
