I’ve never participated in “In a Vase on Monday” before, mainly because I don’t arrange flowers or foliage in vases much, except when hosting parties, and I do so even less frequently now that there’s a cat in the house who enjoys munching raw flowers, leaves, fronds, seedheads, and other feline toxins. The cat-friendly plant list doesn’t sync with the plant-collector list, alas.
But a close friend who moved away a week or two ago (sob) gave me this little cat flower holder, which had been her mother’s, and I want to honour her as well as the prolific and deeply purple (and wet) asters. The October calendar from Botanical Interests, with its “Utrecht Blue Wheat” seedheads, is a rather obvious memento mori and together with the tangible reminder of my friend and the palette of blue & purple expresses my brooding melancholy today.
You ain’t never been blue; no, no, no,
You ain’t never been blue,
Till you’ve had that mood indigo.
On the other hand, the tableau is also a little cheerful and charming, n’est-ce pas?, and so is my friend.
I believe Cathy at Rambling in the Garden came up with the In A Vase on Monday idea.
